March '09 update

 New Director

Mr. Moschitta has been on board now for three months.  During that time, the Union has been obliged to file numerous Step Two Grievances on behalf of the members.  We are pleased to say that we have had positive responses on all matter to date.  While there are still matters pending, in particular, an ability to respond to emergency calls on the grounds, we are actively working to resolve the issue to the benefit of the facility with the least impact on the staff involved.  This is a complex matter, as it requires the facility to reach an agreement with community agencies, which had not been done before.  We will keep you posted as this progresses.

Vacancy Announcements

Rich  Thomesen continues to follow all the openings that are placed in PVA and forwards them to all members on a regular basis.  We encourage you to watch for Rich's messages.  We have had a number of inquiries about some positions and why they were given to new hires, it seems current employees are simply not putting in for them.  We do our best to get these opportunities out, please read your emails and check PVA!

S 292  (legislative bill in currently in Congress)

This is an important piece of legislation for Nurses.  It eliminates mandatory overtime!

If passed, it would also give Part Time RNs permanent status after serving an equal probationary time a full time RN is required to serve (4150 hrs - equivalent to two years of service).  Under current regulation a Part Time RN is always considered a "temporary" employee, subject to termination at any time during their career with the VA.  Management has used this in the past to terminate an RN rather than applying even moderate forms of disciplinary action where the Union could investigate and defend the RN from excessive actions by management.  This could put an end to that type of treatment.

Your Local has been requesting action on these items for years.  Apparently with a growing support from other locals, other federal unions and our National Office, Washington is finally hearing us.  With the pro-union Obama team now in place, this is one of our best opportunities to get these items passed.  We would urge you to contact your Senators and Congressmen to treat this proposal in a favorable fashion.  If you require any assistance with this, please contact our office.

Back Pay?

We are currently awaiting news from National Office about the status of this class action.  We are in frequent contact with both National and FD Local 1 in San Francisco who have been pursuing this issue.  When we hear , we will pass on all information to our members.
